Good Vibrations Forever: Remembering Brian Wilson and the Soundtrack of a Generation

Story By Mitchell Smith

1963 in California was an interesting scene. The Mamas and the Papas, Buffalo Springfield and The Byrds were popular bands but none took over the beaches and the country like the Beach Boys. The Beach Boys were formed in 1961 by 3 brothers the late Carl Wilson, Dennis, and now joined by their brother the late Great Brian Wilson who fronted the band. Wilson who was born in 1942 in Inglewood,CA, passed away on 6/11/2025. His life was a series of up and downs dealing with fame Wilson struggled with substance abuse much like many famous people as depicted in the Barenaked Ladies hit song “Brian Wilson”. Wilson made it through the lies and went back on tour with The Beach Boys up until 2022. I was able to catch them live around 2002 and I’m happy I was able to catch them.

Wilson also appeared in a number of documentary films including the 2018 documentary called “Echo In The Canyon”, about the music scene in California in the sixties. This is really good and I enjoyed watching this. Many groups and singers had influences that led Brian Wilson to writing and performing. This was a very cool time in history and how cool was it to be growing up in a music rich culture, movie rich cult, and tie it all into surfing and just enjoying life to the fullest. One of my all time favorite Beach Boy songs is “Good Vibrations”. This song has so many levels to it, just a masterpiece in my eyes. Among countless hits Wilson also appeared in shows such as Full House and Baywatch as himself and was also himself in the cartoon Duck Dodgers. He is one of the all time greats and his legacy will forever live on with the music he created.

The Beach Boys are still on tour and will be honoring Brian Wilson as they travel from state to state. He will be missed by friends, family, and fans alike. Rest in peace Mr Wilson.
